We emphasize that no victim is ever responsible for being assaulted. The only individual with the agency to prevent violence is the potential offender. To prevent sexual assault/violence, please keep these in mind:

  • Unless you have affirmative and enthusiastic consent from your partner, do not engage in sexual activity or contact.
  • If you partner is incapacitated, asleep, unconscious or otherwise not in a position to give consent freely and without fear for their safety or of retaliation, then you do not have consent.
  • The individual initiating sexual activity or contact bears the greater responsibility to solicit consent and ensure that a communication about consent has taken place.
  • Failure to say “no” or lack of protest or resistance does not constitute consent.
  • If you are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, your ability to assess whether your partners has given consent is greatly diminished; as such, initiating sexual activity while you are intoxicated or high is discouraged.
  • Consent given in the past does not constitute a blanket consent for any or all sexual activity or contact going forward.
