The remainder of this email provides general information about preventing and reporting burglary and is not necessarily related to this incident:

  • Ensure all doors and accessible windows (especially those on the ground floor) are fully closed and locked.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone acting suspiciously, call the SF State University Police Department immediately at 415-338-2222 or 9-1-1 (emergencies).
  • Avoid displaying and/or placing high value items close to windows. Items such as computers, cellular phones, wallets, and purses can be easily grabbed from open windows and also may be incentives for criminals to try and enter the residence.
  • Be alert and aware. Pay attention to who is around when you leave and return to your residence. If returning at night, leave a light on as a visual deterrent.
  • If you discover someone in your residence: If possible, leave immediately and go to a safe area (i.e., a neighbor or someplace public). Contact the police as soon as possible. If unable to leave your residence, secure yourself in a safe location, turn on all available lights, and contact the police immediately.

On Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at approximately 2:22 PM, a report of a trespassing in progress at 415 Winston Drive, Apt. #103, was dispatched to officers. Per dispatch, a white male wearing a yellow vest (possibly traffic or construction) and a mask entered a female resident's bedroom while she was inside and then fled the area.

Upon arrival, officers observed the front door open and splintered from being forced open, and the deadbolt left engaged by the suspect, possibly to prevent the entry from closing behind him to allow for a quicker exit. Officers searched the apartment for the suspect with negative results. There were two female residents at home at the time of the incident. A search of the surrounding area for the suspect met with negative results. Nothing was taken from the house.

The resident who observed the suspect provided an updated description of unknown race male, 5'7" tall, 175-185 lbs., with dark hair, wearing a neon yellow traffic vest with two white stripes, a dark mask (covering his nose and mouth), dark sunglasses and possibly a dark bandana.  The last direction of travel is unknown.
