      CRIME ON CAMPUS

The majority of crimes on campus are crimes of opportunity. Items commonly stolen are bicycles, laptops, cell phones and backpacks. Items most commonly stolen from vehicles include loose change, wallets and other small valuable items. Awareness by members of the campus community is a major factor in reducing these types of crimes. Your willingness to secure your property and report suspicious activities immediately to the University Police Department will assist us in our endeavors to minimize this type of crime.

ON CAMPUS - Never leave your property unattended while on campus.

      WHILE YOU'RE OUT

If you carry a purse have the strap across your body if it’s long enough, otherwise hold it close to your body and not on your forearm. If you have a wallet, avoid carrying it in your back pocket. Put it inside your coat or front pocket.

      1. Don’t flash your personal belongings such as cell phones or laptops.
      2. While listening to music, wear subtle colored headphones.
      3. Keep all personal belongings on your person.
      4. Don’t wear your cell phone on your belt.
      5. Don’t carry passport or important documents related to identity.

      PERSONAL SAFETY TIPS

      1. Don’t walk alone at night!
      2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Observe people and activities around you. Look confident and purposeful when you walk.
      3. Choose busy, well-lit streets and avoid isolated areas, alleys, vacant lots, abandoned buildings and construction sites.
      4. Think about your safety everywhere you go. Be alert and don’t assume you are always safe. Avoid situations that could put you in danger.
      5. Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in any situation, then leave.
      6. Be aware that wearing earphones connected to electronic devices while walking can distract you and make you less able to sense potential danger.

      SAFEWALK SERVICE

      • Unless mobility is an issue, all SafeWalks wil be walking.
      • Please allow for extended wait times so that the SafeWalk personnel can ensure that their vehicles are appropriately sanitized when necessary for mobility transports.

      GRAB AND GO

Recently around campus we have had several incidents where suspects approach their victims asking to use their phone to make “an important call”. Once the suspect has the phone, they take off. Below is a list of things you can do to help protect your property.

      • DO NOT let strangers use your cell phone.
      • Stay alert to your surroundings at all times.
      • Observe people and activities around you.
      • Look confident and purposeful when you walk.
      • Be aware that wearing earphones connected to electronic devices while walking can distract you and make you less able to sense potential danger.

      Internet Sale Safety Zone

As part of the Division of Campus Safety’s (DCS) Community Liaison and Crime Prevention Programs, DCS has designated spots in front of the current SF State University Police station as “Internet purchase exchange locations” that will allow students, staff and faculty to safely conduct and complete internet sale transactions they have made online in familiar surroundings. The spaces provided will be monitored by a video surveillance 24 hours a day and police personnel are nearby to deter crimes that can occur during these types of transactions and ensure everyone’s safety.

In addition, listed below are recommendations to help reduce your risk of being victimized.

      • Always be alert and be aware of your surroundings.
      • Keep personal property close to you.
      • Report suspicious activity and if you see something say something.
